One of the hallmarks of a great classroom is a culture of excellence, which students embody in everything they do. Whether students are raising hands, passing papers, annotating texts, or participating in a discussion, they know how to do it, and they do it well. This excellence is often built on a foundation of well-taught procedures and systems that, with practice and consistency, become routines – actions that students do automatically and with little-to-no teacher prompting.
With this redesigned Plug and Play, aligned with all of our learning in Teach Like a Champion 3.0, you’ll be able to train educators in the techniques champion teachers use to design, teach, and maintain these foundational Systems and Routines.
Unlike our other Plug and Plays, this expanded Plug and Play is designed to be delivered over multiple sessions at different points in the year rather than a single session. Use the Purpose & Design and Routine Building sections before school begins and in the first month of school when you’re training teachers to design and roll out their procedures and systems. Use the Transfer Ownership section after the first two months to support teachers in turning their procedures and systems into routines. As with all of our Plug and Plays, you can customize the content however you’d like to meet your teachers’ specific needs.
Through analysis of champion teachers’ techniques and deep planning and practice, participants will learn how to:
- Design academic, procedural, and cultural systems using three keys: simple, double planned, minimally narrated
- Teach students the systems via Routine Building: Roll Out Why, Model & Describe, Practice. Do It Again
- Transfer Ownership to students via Remove Scaffolding
- Maintain Routines via Reboots when needed.
