Teaching content through text has always been challenging for history and science teachers and it seems to be growing even more challenging in today’s age of social media and ever-shortening attention spans. In the Literacy Across Content Areas workshop, teachers of content areas will learn how to maximize the time students spend immersed in reading and writing as part of their lessons. Our team will share research from cognitive science that addresses the role of attention, vocabulary, fluency, and writing to support students in comprehending nonfiction texts and retaining knowledge they glean from those texts. For each of these areas of research, we will distill key principles for literacy instruction in content areas and provide practical examples of how to integrate these principles into lesson materials and instruction.
In three 90-minute sessions, participants will analyze videos of effective teachers using replicable tools to maximize student learning. Focusing on knowledge reinforcement, vocabulary, shared reading, and writing, session attendees will have opportunities to plan for and practice techniques they can also implement in their own lessons and classrooms.
YOU WILL GAIN:
- An understanding of the cognitive science research and principles behind effective literacy instruction in content areas
- A vision for strong literacy practices in your content area classroom along with practical techniques for implementing these practices in your own lessons
