Join members of the TLAC team to prepare to deliver excellent training on the design and implementation of the Reading Reconsidered Curriculum. This practice-intensive workshop provides instructional leaders and teachers with the tools to deliver high quality training and to drive results. Our workshops include cycles of video study and reflection, technique study, and practice. We model engagement techniques by using Everybody Writes, Turn and Talk, and Cold Call with adult learners.
The Reading Reconsidered Curriculum is designed to build and reinforce knowledge to support comprehension and deeper analysis of rigorous texts in grades 5-8. The Reading Reconsidered Curriculum Training will support teachers’ and leaders’ use of knowledge building tools within the curriculum including embedded nonfiction, embellishments, knowledge organizers, and retrieval practice. Participants in each session will study how to effectively teach new vocabulary before reading and how to reinforce vocabulary acquisition during reading. Participants will also explore the different ways of reading including Read Aloud, FASE Reading, and Accountable Independent Reading and how to build a positive culture around the shared reading of book length texts. Participants will learn three primary types of writing incorporated in the curriculum: formative, developmental and summative writing, and how to use student writing to facilitate meaningful and rigorous classroom discussion. Throughout the course of the five sessions, participants will consider ways to effectively Check for Understanding and best practices for lesson preparation.
Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the cognitive science research that supports the Reading Reconsidered Curriculum and they will consider ways to implement the academic systems and curriculum elements in their own classrooms.
